It began
at home.
With an unfinished patio, a search for something better and a belief that outdoor living deserved real architectural presence.
The beginning
Our patio had become a place to relax, entertain and spend time together, but it never quite felt complete.
Parasols provided temporary shade, yet they were forever being moved. Over many months, I explored timber and metal pergolas, looking for something that could give the space a sense of permanence. What I found felt either cold and industrial or too lightweight to become a genuine part of the home.
I wanted something different: an outdoor structure that felt like a natural extension of the house. Something substantial, beautifully crafted and built with character. A place that offered shelter, comfort and lasting quality while becoming the true focal point of the garden.

The turning point
Not another garden feature.

The answer was not to add more decoration to a conventional pergola.
It was to reconsider the structure from the beginning: its scale, its relationship to the house, the weight of its columns and the way natural timber changes the feeling of a space.
Mackenzie grew from the belief that a pergola should earn its place in the garden, creating shelter and comfort, but also balance, focus and a lasting sense of belonging.
